by Seth on Oct.15, 2009, under MUSIC!!!!
“It may not mean nuttin’ to ya’ll….but understand nuttin’ was done for meeeeee!” I love this Song. Drake is official, Weezy is just himself as always…FIRE, Kanye well…it is what it is, and WELCOME BACK Eminem! I like it.

It took another spin for this to grow on me. Earlier I got a lower quality version and that might have made a difference.

You seem to be hitting the same kind of stuff I listen to which is hard to describe more specifically than “Everything”. I’ll try to describe it one more time. The 40s through the 70s rock on distinct levels for bringing the basics of jazz and pop together in classic ways that are not only generation specific, much of the songs stood the test of time. I like the Hollies for being British knockoffs that managed to mix Long Cool Woman in with more syrupy for a surprise pre-CCR sound. The Beatles simply are to be admired for crossing over in so many ways. They’ve got sucky songs but they’ve got hits all over the board. If rap had been already in play, I imagine they would have gotten in some. 80s brings us a split with pop, new-wave, hopping sounds (I have trouble classifying hiphopy subgenres) and the grass roots of rap and some of it is surprisingly legit for not only being there first but for sounding as good as anything today (looking at early Snoop Dogg on his B-sides). You put in Tribe called Quest which was sort of a hidden gem with more consistency than say Digible Planets. And 80s also gave rise to early metal and industrial which got all sophisticated now so we’ve got Linkin Park where we might not have. I like the slow sounds of Train, Barenaked Ladies, and Maroon 5. Not consistently slow, but a different musical root. I like the raw we can do it attitude of punk specifically found in No-FX, Antiflag, and No Use for a Name. Some underground finds my preferences that way too like Sage Francis. I like sillier but legitimate bands like They Might Be Giants and the Meat Puppets and I still don’t know what’s going on with Gavin Rossdale’s lyrics but Bush is alright (kind of the same with Oasis but a different sound).
So I’ll have to get back on you because I listen to a lot and you do too. I guess if I had to start somewhere, I might say it’s been awhile since I’ve heard good third world music. Are you up on Fela Kuti?
P.S. I’ll let you be the musical Seth for now. I’m the philosopher at the moment as you can see if you click to my blog. I’ma let you finish but… keep up the good work. My external harddrive with 60GB of music failed and I had your links to turn to.

Some second thoughts and then I’ll let you finish.
Oh and big band swing sounds in ska or in proper bands is very laudable in my book. There’s more music I like than I’ve mentioned, but you probably understand that it might be easier to say what I don’t like. I don’t like Christian genre music. The good stuff crosses over like Jars of Clay. I don’t like country because it seems nondiscriminatory of a label. Some of it totally rocks but the labeling seems less precise and I tend to avoid it. I have been impressed here and there though but, again, the best country crosses over.

Cville! That was awesome. We agree on some many levels. It is great to know that somebody else in this world share my MUSICAL OBSESSION! My musical preference all depends on my mood at the time and that shows truth with my posts. I got to get back to work but I will post some hot stuff for ya tonight. Thanks for the love and encouragement. I’m gonna add your blog to my blog links.
